Echos of mountainous landscapes, the grain reminiscent of geological layers, these pieces are cleft straight from the log,
Normally one would leave the surface finish as the last process but with Lightscape the finish is the first process. Once the pieces have been cleft, the exposed surface grain is then left as it is. I protect this surface from the rigours of the workshop environment and carefully dry the pieces over many months.
The top is then shaped with a spoke shave and the bottoms made flat. The top is waxed and the brass candle cups are fitted. The grain surface is given a light coat of Danish oil to protect it from finger marks in the home.
These pieces are made and available in the shop only when a log I split reveals some interesting grain.
(All the pieces shown here are all slow grown ash)
